A biography of Liz Curtis Higgs
A well known personality in American Christian circles, Liz Curtis Higgs has led an incredibly interesting life and has completed her own journey through belief and faith. This piece explores Liz's early life and her successes and achievements to date.
Liz's early life
Teenage years
As a "small-town girl", Liz was desperate to get out and see the real world. She lived as a somewhat troubled teenager, experimenting with smoking, alcohol, and eventually cannabis. She also regularly skipped school and, by her own admission, began socialising with a bad crowd.
Radio career
After completing a BA in English at Bellarmine College, Liz began her radio career at a hard rock radio station in Detroit. Her risky off-air lifestyle threatened to impact upon her career, and her experimentation with drugs became more and more wild.
An all time low
In 1981, whilst working on an AM radio station in Louisville, Liz hit rock bottom, and her lifestyle reached a peak. It was then that a husband and wife team arrived at the station to present a new morning show, and her life was changed forever.
Faith
The couple introduced Liz to Christianity whilst treating her as a friend, and offered her hope of salvation through Jesus Christ. On 21 February 1982, Liz attended her seventh Sunday at her new friends' church, and decided that she wanted to officially follow the Christian religion.
Achievements and successes
Writing
Liz's faith has profoundly affected her writing and lectures. Her primary interest remains the historical novel, and she particularly enjoys setting her stories in old Scotland. She has also brought to life many of the Scripture's most famous female figures, such as Mary Magdalene, helping other women to experience God's word through her writing.
Among her 28 books, Liz has also written some contemporary fiction, non-fiction religious works, and parable stories for young children.
Religious work
Liz's faith has obviously led her to want to "spread the word". She has lectured and offered religious guidance programmes in 50 states and 11 countries worldwide. As well as this, she has been interviewed by many TV and radio stations worldwide, from New Zealand to Scotland. In 1995, Liz was given the Council of Peers Award for Excellence from the National Speakers Association.
In addition, over 4000 churches in America are using Liz's video Bible study series, Loved by God. She is also a respected columnist for Today's Christian Women Magazine. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Bellarmine College in 2005, and an Honorary Doctorate from Georgetown College in 2010.
Liz now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, with her husband Bill Higgs, and they have two grown up children.
