Who is SpongeBob SquarePants?

SpongeBob SquarePants, aka SpongeBob, is an adventurous and charismatic sea sponge which lives beneath a pineapple in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Since 1997, the enigmatic protagonist has been starring alongside his eclectic collection of friends in a long-running Nickelodeon series. SpongeBob is a sea sponge which works in a fast-food restaurant. The shows follow the exploits and escapades of SpongeBob in his weird and wacky underwater world. Other creatures Joining SpongeBob on his adventures are Patrick Star, Squidward Tentacles, Sandy Cheeks, Mr Krabs, Sheldon James Plankton, Gary the Snail and a whole host of other elaborately named marine creatures.

The movie's plot

All is not as it should be in the wonderful world of Bikini Bottom. In spite of the expectation of a promotion at the Krusty Krab restaurant, SpongeBob SquarePants is not handed the manager's position. Furthermore, King Neptune's crown has gone missing and Mr Krabs, SpongeBob's boss, is the prime suspect. Although he is disappointed because he has not been promoted, SpongeBob stands by his boss. Along with his best friend Patrick, he sets off on a perilous adventure to Shell City in order to clear Mr Krabs of all blame and to return the crown safely to King Neptune. As he leaves the comfort of Bikini Bottom, what lies ahead is SpongeBob's biggest challenge yet. Along the way, the heroes must tackle the dangers of the open sea. This includes the infamous Cyclops who have been a menace to numerous sea creatures.

The cast

As with all the SpongeBob episodes, the movie features the voices of Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Doug Lawrence (Sheldon J Plankton), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks) and Clancy Brown (Mr Krabs). There are also guest appearances from Scarlett Johasnson as Princess Mindy, Alec Baldwin as Dennis, Jeffrey Tambore as King Neptune and David Hasselhoff as an unanimated version of himself.
