A review of Timeout, New York
It is said that there is no need to pack a suitcase full of guide books when visiting New York, because the best of the city guides can be found waiting for you in the news stands at JFK and Newark airports.
NYC at your fingertips
Overview
It makes sense to save on the luggage excess, enjoy your travel time and pick up the latest copy of New York Timeout magazine when you arrive for up to date information on all the great events in NYC.
Whether you need the latest show-times, ticket information for Madison Square Garden or simply recommendations for NYC restaurants, the answers are at your fingertips with this city magazine.
As well as covering the well known attractions and night-life, Timeout, NY features some the lesser known things to do in NYC.
Small one-off events, visiting exhibitions, comedy, art and fringe theatre are all detailed in the listings and editorial sections.
NY magazine
This ever popular NY magazine, known locally as Time in NYC, also takes a healthy interest in the dating habits of the city's inhabitants.
This can be either by discussing the most romantic spots in the city or by providing photos and profiles of men and women who are on the look out for a new relationship.
Timeout worldwide
Worldwide
Time out guides are not restricted to just a NY mag of course.
Their full line up includes a Chicago guide, Time Out Paris and many others.
In fact, there are currently around 60 titles in this travel guides range.
Although it runs on a complicated business model, the main centre of operations is in Time out UK and the very first edition was published for London back in 1968.
It was edited by Tony Elliot and Bob Harris.
It was quite radical at the time because of its alternative slant and collective style of management.
The magazine was also a leader in featuring sections specially for the gay and lesbian communities.
Final word
Elliot was the sole owner of the company, until 2010 when Oakley Capital purchased 50% and valued the company at £20 million.
