European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)
The European Computer Driving Licence is an Information Technology course suited to all skill levels as it covers the basics in Unit 1 and goes through an introduction to information technology and each of the Microsoft Office Programmes, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook in turn, teaching you how to use the basic and more technical functions of each programme. The ECDL course is taught throughout the UK at many locations and can be either learned through a taught class at a local college or it can be self-paced, studied through a learning provider such as at a learn direct training centre.
Distance learning
The ECDL is not the only IT training course available in the UK. There are many information technology courses which you can enroll on and your local college or adult education service will be able to provide you with a list of suitable courses. There will be courses for the complete beginner or to the more advanced computer user, and the information technology training will equip you with the necessary skills. Computeach Computeach offer courses on computer technician and engineering roles, and so do other distance learning providers such as ICS and the Home Learning College. If you are looking for a degree qualification in Information Technology, there are a variety of courses available. Some require attendance at university whilst others can be studied from home to fit around work, family or other commitments. It really does depend on the depth of knowledge you want to obtain from your information technology course and the desired qualification. If you would like to obtain a qualification which will enable you to be more conversant with the use of computers, then the ECDL qualification is perhaps the best choice. However, if you wish to build your career in information technology and become a manager of an IT firm or division, then it may be advisable to opt for a degree or higher diploma qualification.
