Why are employee performance appraisals conducted?
Employee appraisal is conducted by using individual performance appraisal forms, supervisor appraisal forms, written examination or by conducting an interview, depending on the intention of the appraisal.
Reasons for conducting employee performance appraisals
-Employee appraisal is conducted when reviewing the performance of workers at the end of the financial year with the intention of endorsing
performance-based salary adjustments, for awarding bonuses and for profit sharing purposes.
-Staff performance appraisal is also necessary when reshuffling staff members throughout the company and assigning them with new roles such as promotion to a managerial position or departmental skill reshuffling.
-Staff performance evaluations can be conducted so as to measure the level of skills within the organisation and to determine whether further training is required, or it is also done for recruitment purposes.
How to conduct the appraisal
The method to be adopted when conducting employee evaluations depends on the objective of doing the appraisal.
Individual performance appraisal forms
Job appraisal is conducted by asking an employee to complete an individual performance appraisal form, in which he will evaluate and rate his own performance by answering structured questions on personal and work-related issues. Employee forms are suitable if the objective of the appraisal is to award performance bonuses, effect salary increases and for profit sharing purposes.
Manager appraisal forms
Manager appraisal forms are given to supervisors to evaluate the performance of their subordinates especially when rescheduling tasks, issuing bonuses and salary adjustments as well as for promotions, demotions and disciplinary actions or further training. The manager will be asked to rate the performance of his subordinate on his personality and his work.
Interview
Employee performance reviews can be done through interviewing the employees involved, especially for promotion purposes.
Written examination
Evaluating employee performance through written examination is appropriate when promoting someone to a senior or managerial level.
Other employee opinions
Staff evaluation can also be done through getting the necessary information on certain individuals from other work-mates, especially when the appraisal is about promotion or to assign the employee with new tasks.
