Decorative baskets can be used in a variety of creative ways, from a hanging basket, waste bin, accent piece, food storage to a decorative storage box for teacups, tool bits, or children's toys. This article will consider certain things to look for when buying a basket.

What to look for?

When choosing decorative baskets, be sure that they are in good condition. Examine the basket's sides, bottoms, and handles if it has any, to make sure that there are no weaves which are undone. You also need to check for holes, broken handles, and weaknesses in the bottom of the basket. You can do so by gently pressing your hand against the bottom of the basket in order to measure how much weight it can take. Be careful not to break it while measuring. If the basket is weak in the bottom, be sure that you will not be using it with any heavy items.

Usage

- Storage Wicker boxes are great for storage. Use them in an open shelving unit for storing kitchenwares, such as onions, potatoes, snack packs, or hand towels. Using decorative basket storage as a focal piece of a room works great for country style homes. Wicker baskets can also be placed with their bottom sides against the wall, and be nailed in place so as to serve as light shelves. - Waste bin Rattan, wicker and other decorative baskets can also be used as a unique waste bin. Bins can be painted, distressed, and embellished in order to match any room. Paint rattan baskets black for a modern room, or paint them in white or pink colour, and distress them for a shabby chic style. - Flower baskets Baskets can also be used as hanging flower holders. Use a wicker storage box, and cover the bottom and sides with a large piece of plastic. Poke holes through the bottom of the plastic, and staple the top to the inside top of the basket. This will prevent soil from spilling out, while the holes will allow water to drip free. Simply fill the baskets with soil and your favourite flowers. Place a set of flowered baskets on a windowsill, or hang with a twine from your porch.
