A guide to Bournemouth International airport

Bournemouth airport is key to the south of England, and sees to it that around 800,000 passengers reach 45 destinations each years. It is known as Hurn airport, a name dating back to the airport's initial use as RAF Hurn during World War II, the airport has been growing steadily since it opened in 1941. Flights and destinations

Bournemouth airport destinations include both national and international, and places in Europe and Africa. Countries served include Spain, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Tunisia, Finland, Portugal, Switzerland, Cyprus, Italy and the Canary Islands. The five most popular destinations are currently Faro, Alicante, Malaga, Verona and Tenerife.

Security and check-in

Check-in desks open 2-3 hours before the departure of the flight and it is advisable to check in with plenty of time to spare. Each airline has its own policy regarding luggage which should always be consulted, but security will always confiscate containers of liquids over 100ml/100g. All containers of liquids should be placed together in a clear plastic bag no bigger than 20cm x 20cm. The same goes for medicines, and laptops and musical instruments will be screened separately by security.

Facilities and services

Bournemouth airport offers free WiFi access for 30 minutes on any media device in any given 24 hours. There is a premium service available on a variety of tariffs, which is suitable for heavy usage. Passengers with reduced mobility are catered for, as are smokers with the new smoking area. The airport chaplaincy is available to everyone and is multi-faith, although there is currently no area specially dedicated to those who wish to pray. There is also a foreign exchange and a travel shop in the airport, ideal, if passengers need more currency or any travel items.

Shopping and dining

As with most international airports, Bournemouth International has shopping and dining facilities, with duty free shops available after passengers have passed through security. There are three food and drink outlets at the airport as well: EstPresso, Joe's Kitchen & Coffeehouse and The Olive Tree. EstPresso and Joe's Kitchen & Coffeehouse are both ideal for a drink and a light bite to eat such as a sandwich or a pastry, whereas The Olive Tree is perfect for passengers looking for a full meal and a glass of wine.
