A guide to St Thomas island

St. Thomas has long been a popular Caribbean destination. Once the stomping ground of pirates like Captain Kidd and Blackbeard, it is now a historic Virgin Island and great place to enjoy sun, surf and sand.

As part of the Virgin Islands, scuba diving, snorkelling, boating, beach combing, swimming and just laying in the hot Caribbean sun are the main activities in the Virgin Islands and a pleasure on St. Thomas Island. Charlotte Amalie
Charlotte Amalie is the charming capital of St. Thomas.
There is a lot of history here and it's worth walking around the town to enjoy the picturesque streets and interesting architecture. Spend the day shopping and browsing in the 400 shops that spread down the main street of the town.
There are lots of duty free shops with terrific deals in fine gemstones.
And aside from the usual souvenir shops, expect to find world class shops selling luxurious linens, fine perfumes and crystal glassware. After shopping, enjoy a fine meal in one of many find restaurants in the town. There is no shortage of eateries from Mexican to Sushi to Italian.
Pick an outdoor eatery and enjoy a relaxed meal, St. Thomas style.

St. Thomas beaches

Beaches
St. Thomas is known for its beautiful pristine beaches and there are over 40 of them, all well maintained with crystal clear water.
Some of the best beaches are on the north side of the island.
Magen's Bay is the most popular beach for swimming because their is little current and few waves.
It's not a popular beach for snorkelling or scuba diving, however. Dorothea Beach has large rock jutting from the sand, but it's picturesque and typically Caribbean.
Other great Beaches include Bluebeard's Beach, Bolongo Bay and Secret Harbor to name a few. Be sure to look for windsurfing, para sailing, and kayaking outfitters on and near the numerous beaches and try your hand at a new sport.

Other St. Thomas activities

Activities
St. Thomas has non-water activities to suit everyone in the family.
The adults can go to the race track to place bets on the horses.
There are some very good golf courses and tennis courts on the island.
The whole family can enjoy the Star Charters Astronomy Adventure which lets you see the Caribbean Sky through a giant telescope.
Cycling and hiking are other great family activities away from the surf and sand. St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands is a safe island and has everything a tourist needs for relaxing time in the sunny Caribbean.
