A guide to changing your name
If you want to change your name, you can start using the new name, but all documents bearing the old names will not be relevant. For this, all vital documents must be changed to the new name. Although, no legal requirement is needed to change a name, proof of name change is needed while using passports, birth certificates, national insurance cards and other documents. Here are some ways in which you can prove that your name has changed:
- Reference letter
This is prepared by a person who knows you quite well e.g. a social worker or solicitor. It is presented to the court for verification. It states the abandoned name and the new name that one intends to use.
- Making a statutory declaration
This is a statement of declaration that states your intention to abandon your old name and pick a new one. This also needs the help of a solicitor or social worker. Once it is done, one can proceed to use the new name.
- Making a public announcement
This is done by placing an advert in a local or international news bulletin, stating that you have adopted a new name. A copy of the advertisement can be used as a proof of name change.
- Requesting a deed poll
This is the commonly used proof of name change. Although, it is not mandatory to obtain a deed poll after name change, it is usually required by many entities who want to affirm the change of your name. Changing your name by using this method can be quite a task as the help of a professional adviser is required.
