Classic coastal style
Ocean blue Using ocean blue in any room will create a fresh, coastal vibe. The trick is to use no more than half of it in your colour scheme to make sure that it looks inviting rather than chilly and unwelcoming. Mix with colours from nature such as sand and sky. Floor coverings made from woven plant fibres such as sisal, hemp, sea grass and jute are perfect for padding around. Using accessories The use of accessories will bring a room together and allow you to be flexible about the exact kind of look that you want to achieve. For an elegant look, work in beach or ocean-inspired prints such as starfish or seahorses, and accessories with natural driftwood. If you want the shabby chic feel of a beachcomber’s hut, try traditional lanterns, blue glass, pebble-effect candles and shell bowls. If you prefer nautical home décor, then statement stripes are the way to go. Use simply a palette of red, white and blue. Shell, rope and sail boat accessories will keep things ship-shape, and colourful bunting adds to a fun and informal feel.
Living the dream
The price of coastal homes can be steep and the closer to the sea that you want to be, the more expensive it becomes. If the cost of coastal living makes your eyes water, then try looking further inland. If nothing else, it’s a great excuse for a weekend break to explore the area. If you’re not afraid of a little work, then look out for unconverted boat sheds and other waterside buildings.
Seaside abodes
Many seaside abodes are purchased as second homes, so if you are going to live there full-time, make sure that you check that the area doesn’t become a ghost town with no facilities out of season.
Consider the extra-cost of maintenance. Salt and wind damage can play havoc with beach front properties, and will need to be revamped outside every four years.
