A guide to sleigh bed
The earliest sleigh beds dated back to ancient Rome. Napoleon was a fan of the bed, and actually decided that every bed that he had should be made in this style. This insistence helped to make it popular in France and throughout Europe. Originally, this bed was designed to be used by one person. The bed gradually grew in size for two persons to sleep comfortably. Nowadays, this bed remains a popular bed style.
Wood beds
One of the original styles of the sleigh beds owes its existence to the French beds which Napoleon loved so much. The beds can be single or of other sizes. The headboards of the wooden beds can curl either forward or, as they most commonly do nowadays, curl outwards away from the foot of the bed. The footboard will curl away from the headboard as well. The wooden sleigh beds The wooden sleigh beds are made with pine, oak, cherry and other woods. The original beds were made with a veneer of mahogany. The original wooden sleigh beds had headboards and footboards that were of the same height. Now, the more modern sleigh beds have headboards that are taller than the footboard.
Leather sleigh beds
The leather sleigh beds share a lot of the same characteristics as the wooden sleigh beds. The headboards can be either taller than the footboard or of the same height. One thing that it will possess, no matter the height, is the characteristic curl of head and footboards. The leather The leather can be of different colours such as black, brown and white, and other shades as well. The leather can be smooth, or have visible seams, or it can have the leather-covered buttons characteristic of upholstery as well. Some of the leather sleigh bed frames will have the leather on the side pieces as well, while others will be plain.
Metal sleigh bed
The metal sleigh bed is a modern interpretation of the classic bed. The curves are present, but in a minimalist style.
Spindles
Instead of a solid headboard and footboard, the boards will consist of spindles. The spacing of these spindles will vary. The finish and texture of the metal bed frames will vary as well. They can be dark or light, textures or smooth. The widths will vary as well.
