All about ceramic water filters

Home water-purification systems are important for every household. Non-purified water can give birth to diseases such as diarrhea, dysentery and other water-borne ailments. There are many brands of water purification filters available today. However, the popularity of ceramic water filters is unmatched. What makes these filters popular? Read this article to learn the ins and outs of ceramic water filters.

What is a ceramic water filter?

A water filter that is made of ceramic material removes chlorine and other harmful elements from tap water to give clean drinking water. As you know, ceramic materials have very small pores. These pores do not allow chemicals to pass through them. The colloidal silver present with ceramic material purifies water to a higher degree. This also prevents algae and moth from developing inside the ceramic water filter.

The technology

Effectiveness of ceramic filtration systems is dependent on two factors, namely, the pore size and uniformity of the ceramic material. These decide the level of purification. Pot type filters and candle type filters are the main types of ceramic filters.

Advantages of ceramic filters

Effectiveness Unlike other tap water purifiers, ceramic water filters are less expensive. They can filter dirt and other residues, including bacteria. Being an inert material, the ceramic body of the filter does not react with water or chemicals. As ceramic is a natural material, it is safe to use. These filters allow minerals and oxygen to pass through them, thus giving you the benefits of mineral water. Maintenance of ceramic filters is simple. You can clean the filter using a wet cloth, scrubber or even a soft brush. Modern filters require high water pressure, and hence, do not work when water pressure is low. This is not the case with ceramic filters. You do not need electricity or battery to use a ceramic filter.
Limitations Ceramic filters are not very strong. Ceramics tend to crack easily when you handle them improperly. Moreover, the output of a ceramic filter is quite low. Expect around 3-4 litres of water per hour. Electric filtration systems based on reverse osmosis filter more water in less time. You should choose a home water filter carefully. If you live alone, it makes sense to invest in a ceramic or carbon water filter.
