Maryland is the 7th U.S. state and is situated in the Mid Atlantic region of the Southern United States. The State of Maryland borders Virginia, West Virginia, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. If you hear someone talking about the Old Line State, the Free State or the Chesapeake Bay State, he/ she refers to the state of Maryland. Population

The State of Maryland has a vast variety of climate types. The eastern half of Maryland, namely the cities of Salisbury, Annapolis, Ocean City and a part of Baltimore, has a humid subtropical climate, meaning hot and humid summers and slightly cool winters. The Piedmont, namely the cities of Frederick, Hagerstown, Westminster, Gaithersburg and a part of Baltimore, has a combination of humid subtropical climate and subtropical highland climate, meaning hot and humid summers and cool winters. Finally Allegany County and Garrett County have subtropical highland climate, meaning mild summers, cool and snowy winters. Storms
The State of Maryland due to its location is vulnerable to tropical cyclones. In Maryland you can find 30 – 40 days of thunderstorms per year and an average of six tornadoes per year. Major cities
The capital of the state of Maryland is Annapolis. Yet, the biggest and most known city of the State is Baltimore. Other major cities are Bethesda, Bowie, Chesapeake City and Cumberland.

Maryland is known as a major centre of life sciences. Indeed, the State of Maryland hosts some of the most important institutions and government agencies, such as the John Hopkins University, the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, the Goddard Space Flight Center, the National Institute of Helth, the National Insttute of Standards and Technology, the federal Food and Drug Administration, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and many other well known and widely respected agencies and institutions.
