Early history
The first issue of Time Magazine was published by Briton Hadden and Henry Luce on 03.03.1923. It was designed as a magazine which would keep "busy men" up-to-date on the news. The entire magazine was aimed at men. Unlike the daily newspapers, there were no discernible sections such as finance, sports, women's amongst others or aimed at particular groups. During the 1930s, the concept was described in this way:
"Time was written as if by one man for one man."
Development
The magazine was constantly developing in its early years. The narrative style used to write in the magazine for the first few years was not to the taste of everyone. It was only in the mid 1930s that Time Magazine developed its own methods of reporting and collecting news itself.
Subscribers
In 1963, Time Magazine was 40 years old. In the fortieth birthday issue, it was noted that the magazine had grown from 12,000 subscribers in those first early years to 3,600,000 people spread across the world.
Revenue
When the magazine started in 1923, there was just $86,000 at the disposal of the editorial staff. By 1962, gross revenue was at $326 million.
Recent years
By the sixtieth birthday issue in 1983, it was noted that the earlier narrative style used in Time Magazine had given way to one that aimed to be unfailingly fair and balanced. American and western values were vital for the magazine, with freedom and democracy central to these values. Bylines were introduced in 1970, ensuring that the authors were no longer anonymous, proving that many individuals could contribute to the overall voice of the magazine.
Innovation
By 2003, the magazine was made up of a combination of reporting, photographs, graphics and analysis that was intended to make the news as clear and informative as possible. This is how the magazine stands now, under the Managing Editor Richard Stengel (2006 to present). Countless reporters and contributors report on the news of the moment.
Special issues of Time Magazine
There has been a number of special issues of Time Magazine, most notably the annual issue which lists the 100 most influential people in the world. The same has been done for the list of the 100 best novels, 100 best movies and 100 best TV shows of all time.
