Electric fence energisers: The facts
Electric fence energisers are known by different names depending on where you may live. They are also known as electric fence chargers or even as fencers. Whatever the name of the purpose they serve is, the same to keep animals or livestock inside a penned area and away from the fence. To learn the facts about this type of farm fencing, read the guide below.

The purpose and the type of energisers
Purpose of energisers Electric fence energisers lower the amps and increase the volts that will be present in the fence. Amps are more powerful and can cause death, while the volts produce a shock. It is this shock that is used to teach the animals that they must stay away from the fence without causing any injury or harm. The types of chargers The energisers used on this type of fencing in the UK are AC powered, battery operated with the batteries being 12V, or finally you can use a solar electric fence. The source of power determines the type of charger. Draining the power from the battery If animals are touching the fence more often or if weeds or limbs from trees are touching the fence or ground, then the power source will drain faster. Animals being trained to use the fence will most likely touch it more often resulting in further drainage, so the battery will drain faster.
Uses and considerations for each type
AC powered
These provide the best form of power if you have access to a nearby source of electricity. These are the most common chargers used on farms nowadays and they provide the best output.
Battery operated
Battery powered energisers are the next best alternative and required when there is no power source nearby. They are available in many sizes and run off 6,9 and 12 volt batteries. 12 volt batteries that are used in cars or boats are the best type to use although they can be operated using D-cell batteries that operate torches or flashlights. The bigger the battery, the longer they last and the more volts are created.
Solar powered fences
This type of energiser is needed when none of the above alternatives are available. An electric fence installation fed off solar power contains a battery for energy storage with the solar panel collecting its energy directly from the sun.
Considerations to choosing the right energisers
Whether you are using fencing to protect a small flower bed or several miles of land, it is important to purchase your electric fence post and supplies to cover a greater distance than you may need. The coverage area for a charger is listed as being under ideal conditions.
