Examples of bad survey questions

What makes a good survey? We have all conducted a survey once in our lifetime, be it in school or in work. However, what is a survey and what composes a good and effective survey? İ will be discussing this in the following article.

What is a survey?

What is a survey? Surveys are a method of gathering information from individuals. For businesses, they are a form of primary or field research and they have a variety of purposes and can be conducted in many ways.
Examples of surveys
Surveys may be conducted to gather information through a printed questionnaire, over the telephone, by mail, in person, by diskette, or on the web. After the survey
This information is collected through the use of standardised procedures so that every participant is asked the same questions in the same way. It involves asking people for information in some structured format. Depending on what is being analysed, the participants being surveyed may be representing themselves, their employer, or some organisation to which they belong. They may also be representing the services of a local business or a product. Effectiveness Surveys are an effective way of getting the truth form the public on something and the information can then be tallied at the end to form conclusions to which those carrying the survey can then respond to effectively.

Examples of bad survey questions

Questions in surveys can be formatted in two ways: Closed and open questions.
Closed questions versus open questions
Closed questions take the form of 'yes' and 'no' answers whilst on the other hand, open questions are structured in a way so that the participant can elongate their answer further than simply yes or no. Therefore, the design of a survey can dictate its ultimate effectiveness. What makes a bad survey? Bad survey questions are those which consist of repetitiveness. One could question what is your favourite subject at school with six possible answers to choose from. However, it is possible that none of the available answers are the participant's favourite and therefore, a false answer or a secondary choice would be given. It would have been preferable in this case to allow for an open question where the participant would have the choice to write their own favourite subject as opposed to limiting the answer. It is therefore important to format the question to correspond with the best answers.
Bad survey questions Bad survey questions are those that have not been thought out and ultimately, the surveyor does not obtain the best answers from the questions. Design the question and answer so that they both correspond with each other's relevancy. There are many internet websites available to assist you in designing surveys.
