Guide to Mexico cruises

If planning a Mexican holiday, there are different Mexican cruises to consider. For the most part, cruises are all inclusive and make for a great way to take a Mexico tour. Here is some information to help plan the perfect holiday including tips about shore excursions.

Mexico cruises

Overview
When considering a cruise to Mexico, it should first be considered whether the trip should focus solely on Mexico or be a part of a greater itinerary.
If sailing from the west coast of the United States, there are Mexican cruises that take place in the Baja, Mexico area along with cruises that travel to the Mexican Riviera with destinations that can include Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco. Mexico can also be part of a Caribbean cruise holiday with ports of call in such cities as Cancun, Belize and Cozumel.
Companies which offer cruises here include Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Lines and Disney Cruise Line.
While cruise lines offer year round cruises to the Caribbean, vacations are limited when it comes to the summer and cruises to either Baja or the Riviera. This is because many cruise lines including the Holland America Line and Princess Cruises switch to Alaskan cruises during the summer months. However, Carnival Cruise Lines offers year round cruises to Mexico.

Mexico shore excursions

Excursions
In addition to the regular itinerary, cruise lines offer what is known as shore excursions. These are like side trips that are offered for an additional fee.
Shore excursions can include city tours, visits to historic locations, water play such as snorkelling or diving along with visits to famous local landmarks.
These can be purchased prior to the departure of the cruise or while onboard. These are only optional. Guests may choose to remain onboard or explore the local area on their own. Keep in mind that although meals are included in the all inclusive price, meals eaten while off board are out of pocket unless included on the excursion.
When planning a Mexico cruise, don't forget about tipping.
Some cruise lines automatically include tips which are billed to each room account. When packing, include pool attire as well as more formal evening clothing if planning to eat in one of the main dining rooms.
While usually warm during the day, depending on where one is on a Mexican cruise, temperatures may drop in the evenings so a jacket is suggested. Taking a Mexican cruise is a wonderful way to experience the history and culture of Mexico. Be sure to check out each individual cruise line for current rates and policies as they can vary quite a bit particularly when it comes to the time of year that a person vacations.
