How to build a shed

Garden shed designs can be of many variations and for many uses. Some people use a garden shed purely to store their tools and gardening equipment while others use them as a place to conduct a hobby or interest away from the house. To learn how to build a garden shed for yourself, read the guide below.

The type of shed that is best suited to your needs

Reasons for a shed
Before drawing up garden shed plans, the first step is to consider what uses you need for a shed - that way your shed can usefully serve its purpose for many years. The right type of shed If your shed is purely for storage solutions, then usually a strong and securely designed shed is paramount to securing your valuable tools and equipment. If your shed is to be used to house outdoor pets or for a work or hobby area, then light will be of more importance. Lightweight or light penetrating roofing materials as well as plenty of window space will be the more favourable options for these scenarios. Local building codes You may have to consult with your local authorities as in some areas, local building codes exist. Ensure that your legal requirements are met before construction begins.

Plans for shed construction

DIY shed plans Consider whether to build a shed completely from scratch by purchasing materials from a builder's supply yard or taking the easier and sometimes cheaper option of buying a shed construction kit. Erecting a shed Prepare a solid base slightly larger than the shed. First erect and secure the floor of the shed to the base. Build each wall on the ground first as this is quicker than attempting to build vertically. Once each wall is completed, they can then be fitted to the floor and the adjoining wall.
Adding the roof
Where the walls were better erected on the ground, the roof is better assembled piece by piece directly onto the top of the walls. Ensure the walls are square and secure before beginning this phase. Fasten joists or rafters to the walls before covering with roof boards. These should then be covered with roofing felt to ensure a waterproof space below.
Windows and door The final step is the windows. If glass is being used, leave it till last. If other materials are being used, then they could be fixed to the walls when they are being constructed on the ground. Fit and secure the door and your shed is complete.
