How to choose a double quilt cover

The double bed was the most chosen bed for many years until the king bed finally supplanted it recently. It is still a popular bed choice owing to the fact that it does not take up as much floor space as a king-sized bed. Finding sheets for the double bed is not hard as it is considered a standard size. When shopping at a bedding shop for double bed quilt covers, there are some details to keep in mind.

The fabric

Quilt covers can be made of more than one kind of fabric. One of the most popular is cotton, for it is soft and cool. Look for the descriptions such as 'Egyptian cotton', 'pima' or 'supima cotton.' Cotton blends of polycotton are also available. However, if you have sensitive skin, then this might not be a good choice for you. Luxurious bedding can include sateen and silk. These will however, be more expensive.

Dye and finish

Less expensive double quilt covers will have the pattern applied to the fabric after it is woven. The more expensive double bed quilt covers will have the pattern woven into the sheet. After a few washings, the fabric will feel softer to the touch. The finish refers to chemicals that are applied to the fabric to keep the fabric from shrinking as well as wrinkling. Some people may find that these chemicals are harsh on sensitive skins. If you prefer a cover that has not been chemically finished, then you can buy a cover that has a natural finish. This means that its production does not involve chemicals at all. An organic quilt cover is another option for a finish-free double bed quilt cover.

The weave

The way that the cover feels, is a result of the way that the weaving has occurred. The basic weave is the method by which the threads "are woven from an equal number of vertical and horizontal yarns." Percale is a weave that has a high thread count of 180 per square inch. Sateen, a more expensive weave, is accomplished by "vertical than horizontal yarns." Owing to the "higher proportion of vertical threads", the result is "an extremely soft fabric." However, this fabric can develop pills. Basically speaking, the thicker the weave, the more durable and long-lasting the quilt cover will be.

How to make your own pillow protectors

Pillows were not always the nice cushy things that we know today. The earliest pillows date back to Mesopotamia as well as to ancient Egypt and were made of wood. Later, the Chinese extended the materials used to jade, bronze and porcelain. It was not until ancient Greece and Rome that softer materials such as straw, down and reeds were used. The pillows today are far closer to those of ancient Greece and Rome. To help to keep them fresh and stylish, make your own pillow protectors.
