How to design your own wedding invitations

Home-made wedding invitations can add a real personal touch to your invitation giving. Make them simple or fancy using as little cards as necessary. In this article, have a look at how to design your wedding invitations to make them something special.

Getting started

The simplest invitations are made with a plain rectangle card. For a traditional wedding, use white or cream and for something more unusual, different colours can be used. You can also get pre-patterned or marbled card from good art suppliers. Think of the colours of the wedding, the dresses and the flowers. You might like to co-ordinate your invitations to match. A sheet of A4 card will make two invitations. Add in your border or create your invitation as a text box so that you can change the background colour. Use different fonts and colours for your wording to make the invitation really stand out. Play around with different images and pictures, adding them around your message and print off a few different examples until you have decided on what looks the best.

Craft ideas

For more crafty wedding invitations, make cards with other materials. Use A4 card folded in half and write your invitation message on the inside. For the front cover, you can design an image that symbolises weddings or love. Cut out a shape, perhaps a heart or a horseshoe, and back it with lace or shimmery cloth. Other materials Other materials can be used on the front cover of your invitation. Tissue paper flowers look great as well as a sprinkle of confetti glued on. Create your design with cloth of different colours to make textured and lively pictures.
