How to find a career that suits me
Are you in the process of switching careers? Perhaps you have just graduated and are looking at the job market now? Regardless, you will not be sorry to search for a career that will shape your future and personality. Read on for more information.
What is your personality?
The most important part of the equation to consider is searching for new careers that lead you to discover yourself. This is where it all begins. One way to find this out is via job tests.
Where do you get these tests?
If you are doing it yourself, make an online search and you will find such tests to complete, free of charge. If you are actually interviewing with agencies for jobs, you may also be tested.
However, instead of testing for your personality, you are tested for how competent you are at certain skills. Although these are not personality tests, being good or not good at something can indicate some hidden parts of your personality.
What are your job preferences?
Only you know what you prefer and do not prefer in your full-time employment. It is okay to stay neutral of course. Some considerations are: 1. Working hours 2. Your level of independence 3. Required formal qualifications 4. Earning capacity 5. Career advancement Working hours Do you prefer a strict 9 to 5 schedule? Is working over-time okay with you and what about shift work, not to mention working on holidays? Independence level Would you prefer to find a career that allows you plenty of independence or would you rather share the responsibility with an authoritative figure such as a task supervisor? Formal qualifications Are you a college leaver or a post graduate student? Do you have professional qualifications from recognised entities? Have you any plans of furthering your education in the near future? Earning capacity You should know that some jobs are limited in their earning potential. On the other hand, there may be jobs promising you that the sky is the limit. In the latter case, you should assess your own potential as to how far you can realistically achieve. Career advancement Is earning a living all you need or are you more ambitious than that? Not unlike earning capacity, some jobs are limited in their career advancement, although you may have skills that are transferable.
Other options to consider
If you are really at a loss, consider hiring a career coach, especially if you are facing a possible change of career. If you are stuck at present, do not be afraid to seek new jobs at a job site, job boards or listings and make a change.
