Eliminate any spores already present.
Cleaning your shower walls
The wall panels of your shower should be cleaned with a 50/50 solution of household bleach and water. Use a spray bottle and wear gloves to protect your hands from the bleach. Apply the bleach and water solution to your shower tile panels as well as to the bathroom walls. Cover all the surfaces and allow the solution to remain in place for a few minutes before removing with a sponge. If any build up of mould is present, scrub vigorously until it has all been removed.
Wash your walls
The next stage is to wash the walls of your shower to further ensure that all traces of mould or mildew and bleach have been removed. You should then allow the walls to dry naturally.
Long-term protection against mould.
Painting your walls
The only way to effectively prevent the long-term build up of mould and mildew is through applying a mould resistant layer in the form of paint. You must apply this in a number of coats beginning with a primer or undercoat. This layer must be applied to recently cleaned walls with a paintbrush or roller to be the most effective.
Applying the top coat
Once the primer has fully dried naturally, then the next stage is to apply a mildew or mould resistant paint. For best results, paint two layers or coats with adequate time between each for the paint to dry.
Tips to avoid mould returning
Use a ventilation fan or open a window after showering. This should allow the heat and moisture to escape preventing an area that the mould spores can begin to work. Keeping your bathroom door open when it is not in use will allow the humidity to escape throughout the rest of the house. Cleaning your shower regularly after use will help prevent the spread of mould.
