Review: Dinosaurs TV series

Dinosaurs was an American television series that was broadcast between 1991 and 1994. It followed the lives of a group of anthropomorphic dinosaurs and used voice overs for the animated dinosaurs that starred in the programme. This article will provide a review on Dinosaurs TV series.

Show's origins

It is commonly believed that the show's origin was from an idea created by the creator of 'The Muppets' Jim Henson. Henson had drawn up an idea of a sitcom that followed the lives of a family of dinosaurs, but the show was not an attractive proposition to producers. Henson passed away in 1990 and his idea was not appreciated by producers until the enormous success of 'The Simpsons.'
Towards the end of 1990, following Henson's death, his concept was finally taken seriously and work began on the series that was picked up by the ABC television network.

The show

The Dinosaurs series is initially set in 60 million BC and follows the Sinclair dinosaur family that consists of the father, Earl Sneed, his wife Frances, their son Robbie, their daughter Charlotte and their baby who is simply referred to as baby. Curiously, the Sinclair family members all appear to belong to wildly different species of dinosaurs, although this problem is never addressed. Humans and cavemen also appear in the show and the Sinclairs live in a fully fledged house that even has a television. Earl's job is to push over trees for the Wesayso Corporation with his friend and co-worker Roy Hess, whilst the rest of the family have adventures at home. The show dealt with many topical issues including, sexism, racism, drug use and even sexual harassment. Baby Baby is one of the show's most popular characters with his catchphrase, 'Not the Mama!' Baby is also often involved in incidents where he should get hurt, but instead shouts, 'again, again.'

Show's statistics

The Dinosaurs TV series ran for four seasons and a total of sixty five episodes were screened. The show was screened internationally and was shown on TV stations in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Belgium and New Zealand to name, but a few. The series was also finally released on DVD in 2006, twelve years after the last episode had been broadcast in 1994.

Fans loved their constant barrage of put-downs and general grumpiness which add a whole new level of humour to the show.

A work of note simply for being the great director, John Huston's only film foray into musicals, the 'Annie' movie from 1982 is an adaptation of the 1977 stage musical of the same name. The stage, musical in turn, was an adaptation of the strip cartoon 'Little Orphan Annie', authored by Harold Gray in the 1920s.
