Smoky Mountain Cabins: The facts

A holiday in America's Great Smoky Mountain Cabins is a wonderful way to reconnect with nature. The Smokies and the surrounding area offer travellers plenty advantages like accommodation including camping, resorts and hotels. However, what better way to experience the mountain lifestyle than by staying in one of the many cabins in the area? Here is an introductory guide to some of the best places to stay in the Smoky Mountain Cabins.

The Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains rise majestically along the Tennessee or North Carolina border in the
south-eastern United States. Part of the Appalachian mountain range, the Smokies get their name from the natural fog that hangs over the peaks. This fog usually appears in the mornings and from a distance resembles large smoke plumes. Much of the park is protected by The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, though the region is also famous for the 469-mile scenic drive known as the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Inside the National Park

The only accommodation option within the National Park is the beautiful Le Conte Lodge. These cabins are only accessible by hiking to the top of Mount Le Conte and, not surprisingly, provide guests with stunning views and unrivalled tranquillity. A stay at Le Conte is the perfect escape from the pressures of modern living as the lodge has no electricity, instead providing kerosene lamps, propane heaters and wash basins for guests. Le Conte offers shared dormitory style accommodation as well as private mountain cabins. As it is the only cabin with the park, guests are advised to book well in advance. For more information, visit Leconte-lodge.com.

Outside the park

Outside the National Park, lodges, mountain chalets and cabins can be found in abundance. Much of the available accommodation is available in the mountain towns, such as Bryson City, Cherokee or Graham County. Larger cabins featuring up to twelve bedrooms are also available in the town of Pigeon Forge. Websites such as Gsmnp.com provide information on the many types of accommodation within the Great Smokies, as well as they provide park maps, activities and information on the towns of the mountain range. A wide variety of mountain cabins, ranging from rustic and resort style can be found throughout the resort towns of the Smoky Mountains. What a better way to experience a holiday in the great outdoors?
