The history In 1736, the Winchester Hospital was founded. However, following its founding, sites located in the town centre raised a number of problems. So much that by the middle of the 19th century, problems with the drainage systems were so high that it was deemed necessary to relocate the hospital to higher grounds in 1861. Florence Nightingale was one advocate of the scheme who helped to advise on the building and the site. Overview The architect William Butterfield created the new hospital, which formally opened in 1868. Upon its opening, it had fourteen out-patients and sixteen in-patients. It was given the title to be 'Royal' after that Queen Victoria gave the permission for it to be named as such.
