The types of cabbage recipes
Cabbage is a healthy, inexpensive vegetable that is easy to grow and widely available at various grocers. There are many recipes for cabbage including braised, broiled, and pickled cabbage dishes. There are many types of this leafy vegetable including green, red, savor cabbage, and napa (Chinese) cabbage. Cabbage entree
Corned beef and cabbage (Makes six servings)
Preparation: 20 min, Cooking time: 2 1/4 hours
Ingredients
2 lbs of corned beef brisket
1 onion, cut into fourths
1 garlic clove, crushed
1 head cabbage, cut into wedges
Directions
- Place the beef brisket, onion and garlic in a dutch oven. Pour just enough water in to cover the beef.
- Heat to boiling, then reduce heat. Cover and let simmer for two hours or until tender and that the juices run clear.
- Remove beef and skim excess fat off the broth.
- Place the cabbage in the broth, bring to a boil, and reduce heat. Let simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes or until cabbage is cooked.
Cabbage salads
Tangy coleslaw (Makes eight servings)
Preperation: 15 min, Chill: 3 hrs
Ingredients
4 cups of shredded cabbage
1 cup carrot, shredded
1 1/2 cups green bell pepper, chopped
1/4 cup green onions, sliced
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup white wine vinegar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp ground dry mustard
1/2 tsp salt
Directions
- Combine all vegetables in a bowl.
- Shake other ingredients in a covered container, pour over the vegetables and stir to blend.
- Cover and refrigerate three or more hours.
- Stir the coleslaw occasionally while it is chilling. Serve with a slotted spoon to strain excess liquid.
Chinese cabbage salad (Makes four to six servings)
Preparation: 15 min, Cooking: 10 min
Ingredients
3 tbsp red wine vinegar
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp cracked black pepper, freshly ground
1 (3 ounce) pkg chicken-flavoured ramen noodles, crushed
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 (16 ounce) pkg coleslaw mix
1 bunch green onions, chopped
1 carrot, shredded
4 ounces toasted slivered almonds
2 tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
Directions
- Cook vinegar and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add salt, pepper, ramen seasoning, and oil then set aside.
- Place the noodles in a bowl and add coleslaw mix, green onions, and shredded carrot. Drizzle the dressing over the noodles and vegetables and toss the salad. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Toss again and sprinkle with almonds and sesame seeds just before serving.
