What are the different genres of PC games?

Video games were at one time a world of their own. However, today, PC games influence everything from pop culture to movies because of the variety of genres which are available on the market. This article will highlight the different genres of PC games.

Defining genres of PC games

Gaming sites and stores separate PC games in genre to make their sites easier to navigate. The genre of a game tells you what kind of experience you are going to have while playing. The main aim of the game determines the genre. One example is, if your character’s main purpose is to fight, it would be classified as a fighting game.

Popular PC game genres

When a new style of gaming becomes popular enough that other games developers duplicate for their own games, a new genre is born. Platform
Donkey Kong, Spyro the Dragon, and Sonic the hedgehog are perfect examples of platform games. You journey through a world, going from point A to point B. Platform games are set with different levels and challenges as you work towards the final challenge. Adventure
Adventure genres create fantasy worlds to explore, where you encounter enemies to conquer and use tactics and strategies to reach a goal.
The examples of games in this genre are Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, and Monkey Island. First-person shooter or FPS Shooter games have evolved into the first-person shooter genre where the player navigates in the first-person perspective shooting and battling enemies. By using strategy and tactics, you fight your way through the game with missions to follow and complete. Wolfenstein was one of the first with others such as Resident Evil, Max Payne, and Deux Ex following suit. Simulation
Starting with games such as SimCity and SimTower, the simulator games give you the control to create and manage the world you build. The Sims is a good example of this where you create people, their homes, and control their lives. Some simulation games re-create an experience such as Flight Simulator to make you feel as if you are actually flying a plane. Sports Sports games simulate playing sports, such as football, skiing, boxing, or snowboarding. Some games give you a character that you train and take through a career. Others like the football series enable you to manage and customise teams. Driving Driving games come in many forms from Gran Turismo to Need for Speed and Burnout. Each game program is unique, giving you the options of playing arcade style or following a career, as well as, different vehicles and driving styles. Other genres that may interest you are: fighting, dance, RPG, horror, puzzle, and hybrids which combine genres for a unique gaming experience.
