When should I use a permanent hair dye?

Changing hair colour is a popular way to alter your appearance and make you feel like a completely new person. Some people like to use hair dye to add some glamour to their style, whereas others are more keen to hide the effects of ageing. Therefore, it's something that a lot of people will try at some point in their lives. This article will examine the use of permanent hair dye.

Using hair dye

Hair dyes are so popular because they are quick and simple to use. There are various methods of applying the change in colour and often these will wash out after a set period of time, which can be a disappointment if the look was a hit, or a nuisance if you permanently want to change your hair colour. Unfortunately, permanent hair dye has a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to safety, having been associated with bladder cancer in its users. Important information According to current tests, people who use permanent hair dyes for one year or longer run twice the risk of getting bladder cancer. The risk level goes up to three times if a woman uses permanent hair dye for over 15 years, or if the dyes are used more frequently. Most shockingly, people who work at hair dressers or barbers for over 10 years have five times the risk of bladder cancer. These shocking statistics are apparently down to a chemical called Arylamines, which is a common ingredient in permanent hair dyes. It is worth noting that the darker the dye colour, the more chemicals have to be added, increasing the risk further.

Permanent versus semi-permanent

Even though the name implies differently, permanent hair dyes are also washed out eventually. The difference between permanent and semi-permanent hair dye is the amount of washes it takes to remove the colours from your hair. Semi-permanent dye usually lasts for around eight washes, whereas permanent dye is said to last for around 25. Permanent hair dye is better for covering grey hair, while semi-permanent dye works best for highlighting. Demi-permanent hair dye If this sounds like neither solution is right for you, you may want to consider trying demi-permanent hair dye. Demi-permanent dye combines the best of both worlds, adding longer life to stronger colours. Demi-permanent dyes have several advantages over permanent dyes, in that there is no removal of the natural hair colour, making the final colour more natural-looking. They are also gentler and safer and are ideal for those looking for long length as well as strong colour.
