Where to find a system administrator job

With the dependence upon technology that the information age has engendered, having the technical expertise and administration skills to keep the networks up and running is a great job security, even in bad economic times. Below is a short look at where to find system administrator jobs and some suggestions to help you to get a job as quickly as possible.

Where to look?

Internet Using the internet to find technology jobs is a natural first step. Whether using websites that cater to all employment fields, such as CareerBuilder.com, Simplyhired.com, Indeed.com, or sites that specialise in one part of the world, such as Totaljobs.com, Reed.co.uk, or Monster.co.uk in the United Kingdom, or else sites that cater to one particular career field, such as Dice.com,Theitjob.com, or Computerjobs.com in the IT field, the sheer volume of sites and listings almost guarantee that a job seeker will eventually find the job he is looking for. Disadvantages There is some downside to using the internet though. That same volume of sites that ensures the perfect job out there can be extremely frustrating and time-consuming to search though. Another potential problem with using the internet is that simply emailing your resume to an HR department that receives large numbers of emailed resumes is not the most effective way to get yourself noticed. Job fairs and industry magazines Depending on where you live, these may or may not be effective tools in your job search. Job fairs have the advantage of a face-to-face meeting with potential employers, but they have the downside of only being scheduled at certain times. Waiting for one may not be an option. Industry magazines have a similar problem to the internet in that you are usually depending on a faceless resume. However, the advantage is that there will probably be less of them to compete with. Employment agencies Agencies give you the advantage of having someone else helping you in your job search. The downside is that they charge you for the service, and if you are unemployed, paying money to find a job may not be feasible.

Things to consider

Certifications While the IT field is a growing industry, competition for jobs can still be fierce. The more qualified candidate is always more likely to get the job. Adding extra certifications to your resume can make all the difference. References If you have worked in the IT field before, talk to former co-workers. Someone may have a lead on a job at their company and provide you with an "in". Flexibility Be willing to relocate or take a slightly different job than the one you were looking for to get in the door.
