World has moved on
Although the world of photography has moved away from film in recent years, with many photographers fully embracing the arguably more versatile world of digital cameras, there are still many photographers opting for the more traditional form of photography. They argue that while there have been huge improvements in the quality of digital cameras over the years, it still can’t quite match the quality of film, with the clarity and tones of 35mm film still outperforming its digital counterparts.
Bargains to be had
As film is now mainly the realm of specialist photographers, with most people opting for digital, you may find that many High Street retailers no longer stock 35mm film cameras. You may have to hunt down a specialist photography store. Should you be a fan of traditional photography, or looking to experiment for the first time with film, there is still a wide range of Canon film cameras available. The good news is that as demand for digital cameras grows, the prices for 35mm cameras continue to fall. There are bargains galore to be had on auction sites like eBay with good quality used cameras such as Canon EOS 300v currently (01.08.11) available for as little as £32, plus postage and packing. The Canon EOS 1V - which was Canon’s last flagship 35mm film camera and was still in production in early 2010 - can still be bought new from some suppliers for just more than £1000 (01.08.11). This amount is still cheaper than the leading professional digital camera.
Amazon
Even sites such as Amazon still have 35mm cameras available from sellers through their sites, giving the buyer added protection that you may not get from online auction sites. The prices are cheap with the Canon rebel 35mm going for approximately less than £50, and even the strong, sturdy and almost unbreakable professional Canon EOS 1V HS is available for around £729. However, prices vary. So, be sure to check the website for details.
