A guide to Kona (Big Island) Hawaii

Planning an island vacation to Kona? Trips to Hawaii can either be completely relaxing or filled with tours and attractions. Of course, spending time at the beach is a must when visiting the Big Island, but there are many more things to see and do. Here is a look at some of them to help with trip planning.

Travel to Kona

Cruise Taking a cruise is a great way to get the feel of Kona. Body Glove Cruises offers a Dolphin & Snorkeling Cruise during the day, as well as their Whale Watching Excursion. In the evening, embark on a Historical Sunset Cruise, which includes a Hawaiian dinner that features Teriyaki beef kabobs, Lomi, lomi salmon and grilled pulehu chicken while learning about Hawaiian history. Exploring the island Looking to explore the entire island? Gray Line Tours provides the number one Grand Circle Island Tour, that is a full-day tour, which includes Volcanoes National Park and Jagger Museum. Hawaii Forest & Trail has both half and full day eco-tours, which include volcano, waterfall and bird watching adventures. Come face-to-face with dolphins with one of the programs provided by the Hilton Waikoloa. Programs are available for ages two and up.

Kona vacations

The seahorse farm
For something truly unique, visit the Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm, where visitors can touch and hold seahorses. It is the only seahorse farm in the United States and is working to help save endangered species. See exotic fish and marine animals with a one hour narrated underwater tour aboard Atlantis Submarines.
Hawaiian luau No trip to Hawaii would be complete without experiencing a Hawaiian luau. According to reports on Tripadvisor.com, one of the best luaus on Kona is the Gathering of Kings Luau, which combines both traditional and modern dance, along with a Hawaiian feast including fresh seafood, papaya chicken and an assortment of fresh fruit. Big Island Air and Kahalu Beach Park Soar over rain forests, waterfalls and ancient valleys with Big Island Air while learning the history, legends and myths of Hawaii. If looking to snorkel, Kahalu Beach Park is recommended as it has a large variety of fish which can be viewed. Beach rental gear is close by. Coffee farms
Kona is known for its coffee farms with more than $20 million worth of coffee produced each year. Many coffee farms are open for touring including Hula Daddy, which also features a tasting room. Besides its beautiful beaches, there are many more sights and attractions to be enjoyed when visiting the Big Island. Be sure to book in advance, if possible and know that this is just a sample of the fun and relaxation that awaits visitors to Kona. Source AAA Hawai'i TourBook, AAA Publishing
