A guide to Sentosa Island, Singapore

Sentosa means peace and tranquillity in the Malay language and it is a popular island resort in Singapore. Although the island has two five star hotels, the majority of its five million annual visitors visit daily. Its most popular attractions are its theme parks and covered beaches. Read the guide below to learn about the attractions of Sentosa beach and resort.

Getting onto the island

Sentosa Boardwalk This footbridge was officially opened in January 2011 after costing S$70 million to construct. It includes themed gardens, shops and restaurants. The walkways are covered and equipped with travellators. It provides visitors with an alternative way to arrive on the island and is an attempt to avoid private vehicles from being brought across the causeway. Diversity of the island The island covers five square kilometres and is the fourth largest island, not including the main one. It is just 500 metres from the main islands southern shore and 70% of the island is rainforest. It is the home to monitor lizards, monkeys, parrots and peacocks. Along its shores are 3.2 kilometres of white sandy beaches.

Attractions on the island

Tiger Sky Tower This free standing structure reaches a height of 110 metres and offers views across Malaysia and Indonesia. Visitors enter a disc-shaped cabin which slowly revolves as it ascends the tower. It carries 72 passengers at a time. Butterfly Park and Insect Kingdom There are over 15,000 live butterflies housed within the conservatory with the largest measuring over 6 inches in size. Insect kingdom houses over 3,000 species of rare insects, the largest beetle being of a similar size to the largest butterfly.
4D, Cineblast and live shows There are a variety of live and cinematic shows across the island with pyrotechnics, lasers and south east Asia’s original 4-dimensional theatre. Cineblast is Singapore’s only cinema ride.
Fort Siloso The refurbished fort originally built by the British in the 1880s houses a collection of military guns. It is the only survivor of the 12 forts which once protected the area from enemy invasion. Displays include barracks, tunnels and gun emplacements. Adventure Park Singapore’s first adventure park features one of the longest and steepest zip wires in Asia. Other attractions include a climbing wall and a free-fall parachute simulator. Azzura Beach Club This entertainment, dining and hydro sports centre contains Singapore’s first barrelling wave machines within its wave house located at Siloso beach. Moreover, connected to the centre is a Skyride luge which sends visitors 650 metres downhill to the beach complex.
