The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) is a public university located in the US state of north Carolina. The college enjoys a particularly high reputation for its work in the areas of marine biology, film studies and creative writing. The college motto is 'Discere Aude', rendered in English from the Latin as 'Dare To Learn'.

History & location

Foundation
The college began life in September of 1947 as Wilmington College, which operated as junior college and helped thousands of returning World War II veterans improve their education. It is commonly referred to nowadays as UNC Wilmington.. History
The college became a senior college in 1963, while it was authorised to offer its first graduate programs at Master's level in 1977. An integral part of the 17-campus University of North Carolina System, the college enrolls approximately 13,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students Location
The college's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean is a draw for potential students, and in part helps to explain the presence at UNCW of a highly respected marine biology program. The town of Wilmington itself has a population of around 106,000, and is located on the banks of the Cape Fear River.

Learning & lifestyle

Colleges
The college offers 52 undergraduate degree programs, 36 Master's degree programand two doctoral programs. It is organised for academic purposes into five colleges, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Cameron School of Business, the School of Nursing, the Watson School of Education and the Graduate School.
UNCW Athletes
The UNCW Athletics teams are known as the Seahawks. Fielding 19 varsity teams in a host of sports, competing in Division 1 of the NCAA's competitions. The nickname was apparently selected by vote of a five-man committee in 1947, and owed something of its choice to the success at the time of the Iowa Seahawks, who were known for their strong sports teams. The school colours are kelly green and yellow, and were also chosen in 1947. In 1992 navy blue was added as a secondary colour to improve marketing opportunities. College sporting success ranges from men's basketball to the college's club ultimate Frisbee teams, known as the Seamen and the Seaweed.
