A guide to buying a wooden jewellery box

There are so many different wooden box designs for jewellery on the market, that you first need to decide who you are buying the box for, and how much is your budget, and that should narrow the search down a little.

Types of wood used in jewellery boxes

Wooden jewellery boxes range in price from a few pounds to over £1000. The choice of wood finishes is just as diverse, from simple pine, to bamboo, African ebony to American Alder wood. Hand-made boxes are becoming popular as people are looking for something a little different from the mass produced boxes generally available, and a wooden gift always feels more special. Hand-made wood jewellery boxes made from Mahogany, cherry wood, or elm, are beautiful pieces of craftsmanship in their own right, very often with a highly polished gloss finish. Some hand-crafted jewellery boxes have marquetry on the outside, where another contrasting wood has been in-laid into the surface of the jewellery box to create a design. Boxes with Marquetry and also hand-carved boxes can often be bought from local craft fairs, and because they are hand-made, each piece is unique. Another wooden box with a sophisticated finish is African Ebony, which is very dark, almost black, then has oriental flowers and designs painted on, before being lacquered, to give a high gloss finish. Of course you can also buy simple wooden jewellery boxes made out of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) so that you can decorate it yourself before coating it in a protective varnish, and lining the inside with felt.

Different styles of wooden jewellery box

There are many different types of jewellery box design from a simple wooden jewellery chest with a lift out tray, to a jewellery case, or to a very elaborate box with drawers, and specific areas for rings, necklaces and earrings etc. You can also have musical wooden jewellery boxes, and wooden jewellery boxes with special children’s themes. Often, wooden jewellery boxes will incorporate a decorative glass panel in the lid and these are good for jewellery display. If you are buying a piece of jewellery for someone special, you might consider buying them a wooden jewellery box to put it into, and then the box becomes jewellery packaging that you don’ throw away. You can buy wooden jewellery boxes for specific items of jewellery, such as necklaces, or trinket boxes that can be used to store earrings, and although many of the jewellery boxes described here are for ladies. There are men’s wooden jewellery boxes specifically designed to store cuff-links, tie pins, and watches etc. You can even use simple decorative wooden boxes as storage boxes for jewellery, or why not use them as wooden gift boxes.
