A guide to ring stone settings

There are many different types of ring settings for gemstones, each having their own advantages and each creating a different style. It is very much down to personal taste as to which particular setting you choose and we will be looking at some of the more popular settings on offer. Read this article to learn more about ring stone settings.

Types of settings

The Prong setting
First introduced in 1886, it is by far the most popular style of setting used. Particularly good in a diamond setting for engagement rings, it lifts the stone above the shank and allows more light to penetrate the stone, giving the stone more brilliance. The setting consists of either four or five evenly spaced prongs, or claws, that grip the stone firmly. It is quite popular for the setting to incorporate side stones, one on either side of the main stone. These can either be prong or channel settings, but they add substantially to the overall effect of the finished ring. The classic Tiffany setting
The classic Tiffany setting was introduced around 1850 and was the fore runner of the prong setting. It had six evenly spaced claws to cradle the stone. The Cluster setting
The Cluster setting is where many smaller stones are set closely around a central stone to create the illusion of a much larger stone. The Ballerina setting The Ballerina setting consists of a centre stone, with baguette cut (rectangular) stones set close together around it. The Pave setting The Pave setting comprises of many small stones set closely together with invisible prongs to create a larger uniform area of gemstones. This is the setting for making a statement and standing out from the crowd. The Channel setting
The Channel Setting is where a number of stones are set close together in a channel within the metal of the ring and forming a continuous band of stones which are often used in wedding rings and eternity rings.

Why not create your own ring? A style unique to you for that special occasion. Some jewellers will allow you to either choose your favourite setting and then select stones for that setting.
