A guide to setting up a wireless home network

Today, most homes have more than one computer and they need a wireless home network set up. A wireless home network allows all computers to be connected to the Internet and it also ensures the ability to share files and peripherals between computers. This article will help you get a wireless home network set up in your home in a few short steps.

Equipment

If you already have a computer and high-speed Internet connection at home, you are already half way to setting up a wireless home network. The only other equipment that you will need is a wireless modem and wireless network adapter for each computer at home.

Wireless router

The router is the device that connects the computers in your home to your modem. The router gives each computer a unique address which allows the router to determine which computer is supposed to receive which signal. Using a router allows all computers to share one modem. ADSL routers are one type of router which you might have.

Wireless network adapter

If you are using a laptop, it is more likely that it already has a wireless network connector. You can check the user manual to find out. Some newer desktop computers are also equipped with wireless network adapters. Using a wireless network adapter eliminates the need for running wires throughout your house. Most of these adapters simply plug into a free USB port on your computer. If your computer does not already have a wireless network adapter, you can purchase one at any computer retail store or online.

Configuration

Configuration will vary depending upon your system. Your router will include the necessary instructions that you need to configure your router correctly. Most routers are very easy to set up and you will hardly have to do anything, except to give your computers an address. Password You should also make sure that your wireless network is secure with a very unique password. If not, anyone within the range of your router will be able to use your computer and possibly get into your files. Refer to your router’s user manual on how to add password encryption to your wireless router. The user guide that comes with your router helps you with all your networking solutions. It has very easy step-by-step instructions on how to set up and configure the router. It will also show you how to have IP Security in order to ensure that you are the only one using your router.
