A guide to the City of Boston

Boston, Massachusetts, provides a range of activities that appeal to the young and the old. Enjoy a range of cultural and educational excursions when visiting Boston. Shop for gifts at Quincy Market or sample Italian Boston restaurants in the North End. There's so much to do in Boston that a day or two isn't enough time to see everything.

Dress for the weather

Boston weather depends upon the season. The capital of Massachusetts is a coastal city. Winters are cold with plenty of snow. A Nor'easter will dump heavy amounts of snow. It's best to stay inside when these blizzards hit. If you must go out, dress in layers for warmth because average lows are around 20 degrees F, and if the windchill drops the temperature follows suit. Spring is mild with plenty of rain. Bring a raincoat or umbrella to stay dry. Average temperatures are in the 50's, so you'll want long sleeves and pants are advised. Summers in Boston are hot. Breezes off the ocean keep humidity from being unbearable. Light clothing is best because temperatures do get into the 80's and even the 90's.

Getting around Boston

The Boston tourist should carry Boston maps, particularly maps of the subway system. The subway system is the best way to get from one side of the city to the other. The destination guide makes it much easier to navigate the subway system. Purchase a CharlieCard or Ticket before entering the subway station. Buses also accept these passes. CharlieCards offer free transfers making them a popular option with Boston tourists who need to switch lines. Rides start at $1.25 for bus and $1.70 for subway.

Boston's biggest attractions

Learn Boston history by hitting the city's historical buildings. Follow the 2.5 mile Freedom Trail, with a Boston city guide or walk the path by yourself. This walk and important buildings are clearly marked along the city sidewalks. The trail starts at Boston Common and ends at Bunker Hill Monument. Fenway Park and Yawkey Way are hot destinations for sports enthusiasts. Take in a ball game when the Boston Red Sox are in town. Yawkey Way shuts down during games so that concessions stands have a safe place to set up shop. Before the game, head across the street to Boston Beer Works for a meal and a handcrafted brew.

Popular Boston events

Every spring, runners from around the world compete in the Boston Marathon. Visitors who don't wish to compete are welcome to stand along the sidelines and cheer on the racers. Boston's Local Food Festival is a highly rated Boston event. Every October, visitors sample local foods, seafood, beers and wines. This festival is located on the Boston Waterfront at Fort Point Channel.
