A history of three-wheeled bikes

Leonardo da Vinci made the first design for three-wheeled bikes in the 15th century. The perfect ratio for power to weight in a vehicle incurred the preference for three wheels. England had the best roads, but eccentric laws like the Red Flag Act required a man to walk ahead with a red flag that slowed the speed of all vehicles.

Steam and benzene powered

The first three wheelers were powered by steam in the 18th century, but it was in 1884 that Edward Butler revealed the plans for a petrol engine. In 1885, Karl Benz exhibited the first motorcar which ran on three wheels and benzene. Meanwhile, tricycles which were powered by pedals and chains became very popular in England. The success of these bikes can be gauged from the fact that in 1884, more than 100 different models were available in tricycles.

Slow down during the two World Wars

World War I put a brake on the development of motorised all-terrain tricycles. The years rolled on and saw the rise and demise of various names including Beeza, Bond ‘Mk A’ and Frisky. Meanwhile, the tricycle kept being developed by innovators like Reliant and Bond. The two companies merged and created famous three wheelers like the Bond Bug and the Reliant Robin in 1970-1975.

Balloon tyres and Bond

This was the time when Honda hit the market with all-terrain three wheelers which have balloon tyres. They even featured in the 1971 James Bond movie 'Diamonds are Forever'. Honda held the monopoly for ATV bikes for years. Suzuki introduced their four wheelers in 1982 with the QuadRunner LT 125. The race for Quads ATV was on. 1983 saw Honda marketing their quads bike: FourTrax TRX250R. Kawasaki jumped in with its
Tecate-4 250.

Popular sporty look of Quads

Over the years, ATV racing has become a popular sport. ATV sales have also been rising with the popularity of the vehicles. There is a good demand for ATV's fancy tyres. Interest in these fancy vehicles is natural. Young kids look forward to their first ATV or T-Rex car. This is a whole range in itself from bike for kids to dirt bikes. A section not to be omitted is bike for girls. Tricycles for children have been there since the late 19th century. The enthusiasm for Quads ATV is naturally maintained by these young bikers who dream of the days when they will grow up and ride fancy ATVs. It is certain that the vehicles that they ride will be superior in performance to the ones that are seen today. This is because ATV's popularity leads to constant innovations. The sporty look of the ATVs assures that it will still be there for a long time to come.
