About the movie

Jesminder 'Jess' Bhamra has a serious passion for football, yet she also has some stiff opposition. The daughter of a Punjabi Sikh family living in Hounslow, Jess's family do whatever they can to prevent her from playing. However, when Jess meets Juliette 'Jules' Paxton, her life changes dramatically. Without her family's knowledge, Jess joins Hounslow Harriers and travels to Germany for a football tournament. When the family members find out, not only must they deal with Jess's sporting desires, but also her growing relationship with Joe. The Bend It Like Beckham movie cast is made up of a group of well-known British and Indian actors. These include Parminder Nagra (Jess), Keira Knightley (Jules), Shaznay Lewis (Mel) and Johnathon Rhys Meyers (Joe).

The soundtrack

Boasting an eclectic mix of musical genres, the soundtrack is a great addition to all fans of movies and music. In tune with the movie, songs are uplifting and motivational. In fact, the soundtrack was awarded the Music Prize at the 2004 Pyongyang Film Festival. The UK soundtrack features seventeen songs plus six short dialogues taken from the movie. The US release is a condensed version of 13 songs only. Musical genres present on the soundtrack include Bhangra pop, Hindi dance, Motown, Indie rock, pop and opera. Well-known names who contributed to the songs are Basement Jaxx, Blondie, Texas, Tito Beltran and soul legend Curtis Mayfield. There are also tracks by former Spice Girls Melanie C and Victoria Beckham, the latter being the wife of football star David Beckham, who the movie was named after.
