A travel guide to southwestern England

Southwestern England has some of the best coast in the country and is a beautiful area to escape to. It is easily accessible by car or train from London and is a great way to visit another side of the UK.

What southwestern England has to offer

The South West part of England is not usually on most tourists' initial agenda as they are more likely to stick to London and the surrounding areas. However, just a few hours away, you can find some amazing countryside, lots of history and some great hidden gems. Beaches The best beaches in England can be found in the South West. Devon and Dorset are well-known for their rugged coasts and sandy coves. Or, if you are happy to venture a bit further, Cornwall is a very popular holiday destination for the British because of its coastal villages and beautiful beaches. History The biggest historical draw of the South West is probably the world famous Stonehenge. Moreover, there is also the Winchester Cathedral, Exeter, Bath and plenty of other places filled with historical sites to enjoy. Tourist attractions The Eden project is an amazing set of eco-Domes where you can experience the world's climates in a valley of Cornwall. The Minack theatre is another great experience, clinging onto the side of the cliff by Lands' End.

Getting there

Most tourists stick to the capital because they are unsure about how to get around the country, but it is easy to do. Trains The easiest way to travel from London is by rail. There are frequent trains with lots of connections and you can buy your tickets online. To get cheap train tickets, it is best to book in advance and you can search for cheap deals online before you travel. Car Travelling by car is a great way to get out and to enjoy the South West. It is quite straightforward to hire a car and you can get cheap deals from the major providers. Another option to consider is to use motor clubs if you are planning more than a one-day trip. You usually have to pay for the membership but then, the rental is good value and it can work out less that the traditional suppliers.
