Theme areas
Overview
The park is part of the Walt Disney World Resort, which includes four theme parks: Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Animal Kingdom is the third most visited park of the four, right above Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Animal Kingdom Disney is divided into seven theme areas: Oasis, Discovery Island, Camp Minnie-Mickey, Africa, Rafiki's Planet Watch, Asia, and DinoLand U.S.A. DinoLand is the only area dedicated exclusively to animals that no longer exist.
Animal areas
The African and Asian areas house a number of animal exhibits, which you can explore while riding an open-sided safari vehicle or by trekking through the jungle. There’s a live bird show and a large number of animals to see, including fruit bats, gorillas, giraffes, and hippos.
Oasis, which acts at the park’s entrance, also houses animal habitats where guests can see giant anteaters and muntjacs (barking deer).
The other areas
Camp Minnie-Mickey is the simplest and smallest of the areas, home to the live musical, Festival of the Lion King.
Discovery Island is the largest and most important area, home to some of the major rides, such as the Kali River Rapids.
Unique rides and attractions
Rides and attractions
Although the park’s main attraction are the many animal exhibits, there is also plenty to do for those in search of an adrenaline rush.
Thrill rides include spinning roller coasters, water rapids and 3D multimedia shows. The park’s central point is marked by The Tree of Life, a 14-story carved tree that acts as a map for the whole park.
The Wildlife Express Train takes visitors through the jungle and from one area to the next. There are also trails and guided treks through the Africa and Asia areas, where guests can get up close and personal to the animals.
Conservation
Final word
Disney World Animal Kingdom has a number of conservation programs running inside the park.
These are run from inside the Rafiki's Planet Watch area.
Visitors can get a peek into the park’s veterinary station, as well as see how the park provides care for the animals both in the park and in the wild (through conservation programs).
