General information

Origin
Kansas is the 15th biggest U.S. state situated in the Midwestern United States. The name of the U.S. state derives from the Kansas River which was named after the Kansa tribe, which used to live in the area.
Demographics
The state has almost 3 million residents (according to the 2010 Census) which are called Kansans.
The majority of Kansans is Christian Protestants. Climate Kansas is the 9th sunniest U.S. state and has three climate types.
The eastern two -thirds of the state have humid continental climate, which means cold winters and hot, humid summers.
The western third of the state has semi - arid steppe climate, which generally means very hot summers and unsteady winters.
Finally, the far south-central and south-eastern areas of Kansas state have humid subtropical, which means hot, humid summers and mild winters.
Another characteristic of Kansa’s climate is that the state is prone to thunderstorms, which usually turn into tornadoes (even EF5 tornadoes, the strongest type of tornadoes).
Kansas comes second to Texas in reporting tornadoes.

Major cities
The capital of Kansas is Topeka; yet the state’s biggest city is Wichita followed by Overland Park. Other major cities in Kansas are Kansas City, Olathe and Lawrence.
Transportation
Kansas is served by two Interstate Highways.
The state’s only major commercial airport is Wichita Mid – Continent Airport. Travellers also use the Kansas City International Airport in Platte County, Missouri and Denver International Airport in Denver.
There are other smaller airports in Kansas, such as those in Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend, Hays, Forbes Field and others.

Kansas also has numerous national parks under the protection of the National Park Service.
