All about: The "C is for Cookie" song

"C is for Cookie" was written by Joe Raposo and was first heard on Sesame Street in 1972. It was released on an album the year before that and has now become one of the most popular and recognisable songs in the history of the show. It continues to be performed and over the course of the show, has been performed by many other performers.

Cookie Monster

Cookie Monster is a Muppet on the children's television show Sesame Street. He is best known for his voracious appetite and his famous eating phrases: "Me want cookie!", "Me eat cookie!", and "Om nom nom nom" (said through a mouth full of food). Showing awareness of healthy eating habits for children, since 2006 he has said that cookies are "a sometime snack" and that he also likes fruits and eggplant. He has been shown as having a family and alongside his eating sketches, he has hosted the Monsterpiece Theatre over the years. He and his Sesame Street friends are popular motifs on T-shirts.

The song

The "C is for Cookie" song and lyrics are a very popular sketch that almost never made it onto the show. The original version of the track was released on the album The Muppet alphabet album. It has been released in many versions over the years and some of these are authorised or unauthorised, but all versions follow the same lyrics and style of the Cookie monster. The song was semi-retired when PBS got concerned about obesity levels in children, and Cookie monster decided that cookies were a "sometimes" food. At the end of this first sketch, Cookie Monster decided that "now" was "sometimes" and devoured the cookie, showing that some things never change.

Other versions

Over the years, there have been many versions of the song performed both on the show and on albums released through the Sesame street label. Some of these versions have become almost as famous as Cookie Monsters; Candice Bergen performed the song when she visited the show. They even did an Operatic version with Marilyn Horne as Cleopatra in an Egyptian setting, in order to match the spirit of Cookie Monster. The pyramid was seen to be made of cookies, but sadlyCookie Monster managed to destroy the pyramid by taking a cookie from the bottom, causing it to crash down.
