Guide to New York broadway shows

Broadway NYC is the home of some of the best theatrical productions in the world, from shows that have been running for a decade to new exciting experimental pieces. Whilst this article focuses mainly on best of Broadway's musicals, Broadway plays host to many fantastic straight plays that deserve to be seen.

Broadway

There is a list of Broadway shows which can be found at the New York Theatre Guide, it lists details for all current Broadway shows. These are just a few of the most popular. 'Chicago' has not always been popular, opening shortly after 'A Chorus Line' in the 1970s it gradually built up fame and reputation. It tells the story of Velma and Roxie, two vaudeville stars who murdered their lovers. It's sexy, funny and seems truer today than at any other point. The Broadhurst Theatre is hosting 'Baby It's You' another must see show. Set before Motown, Florence Greenberg takes the male dominated music industry by storm by becoming one of the most successful record industry moguls. 'Rock of Ages' plays at the Helen Hayes Theatre and consists of 80s glamour rock music. Perfect for Heart or Whitesnake fans who want to sing along. The story of Sherry and Drew (Wolfgang von Kolt, to use his stage name) is told with humour (some of an adult nature) and it's hard not to be swept up in the story.

Off-Broadway

Off Broadway theatres show some shows you may never get to see again and the hits of the future. 'Avenue Q; is famous for being one of the first shows to use puppetry. It contains some adult humour, including the song 'everyone's a little bit racist', but is heartfelt and good fun. 'Newsical the Musical' is a new show which looks at current affairs, politicians and celebrities. Running for one year only before adjusting to represent how society has changed. Guaranteed to make you laugh and consider the society in which you live. After 12 years on Broadway, hit musical RENT written by Jonathon Larson is to open off Broadway in the summer of 2011. It follows a year in the life of Mimi, Roger, Benny, Angel, Collins, Maureen, Joanne and Mark as they struggle with life in Alphabet City, love and AIDS. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking, this show is a classic. Finally, although Broadway tickets can be expensive there is a show for you, and if you are in New York then it is well worth finding something to suit your tastes.
