What to see and do
Best of Barbados There are so many things to see and do on Barbados. However, the Barbados Tourist Board recommends the "Seven Wonders of Barbados". First on the list is the 'Harrison's cave', an underground cavern with marvelous stalactites and stalagmites which is just under two and a half kilometers long. It's an active cave system which means that every year, it grows a little bit more. Next, is two Baobab trees, native to Africa, which were brought to the island in 1738. These trees look as if they are upside down, with the roots in the air. Both trees are enormous, around 13 meters round. Jacobean mansions and a famous Jewish synagogue Among the 'Seven Wonders', are two Jacobean mansions which were built in the 1650s and a Jewish synagogue which was built in 1654. Unfortunately, the synagogue was destroyed by a hurricane in 1831 and fell into disrepair. It was bought by the Jewish community in 1983 and has now been restored to its former glory. Sugar was one of the most important exports from Barbados and you can visit the Morgan Lewis sugar mill, which is one of the only two intact and restored sugar mills in the whole Caribbean. The final two wonders are the impressive collection of the rare 17th century English iron cannon, and a visit to the birthplace of the grapefruit, which was invented on Barbados, according to the legend.
