What is mob griptape?
Mob griptape is a brand of skateboard griptape which helps to keep shoes gripped to skateboards while doing tricks or while simply moving. Skateboards usually come with griptape already installed on the board. However, if the board doesn't have griptape on it, or if the griptape has become loose or torn, then applying new griptape is a good idea. Obviously, the old griptape will have to be removed beforehand.
Taking griptape off
In order to apply new griptape to a skateboard, the old griptape must be removed. This can be done in a few simple steps. - Remove the truck bolts and the trucks from the board. This can be done with a flat head screwdriver or with a wrench. - Warm the old griptape at one of the ends of the skateboard with a hair dryer for three to four minutes. - Pull the warmed griptape from the edge of the board, and keep pulling until the board is free of griptape. - Use a butter knife or a metal putty knife to remove griptape that is still stuck on. - Spray a rag with lubricant and wipe the board to remove any adhesive. Then, spray another rag with water to remove any remaining lubricant.
Putting griptape on
Installing new tape is relatively simple once the old griptape has been removed. - Roll two to three inches of the backing sheet from the tape to expose the adhesive side of the griptape. - Place the new griptape over the board, centred over the skateboard deck. Press the exposed adhesive side of the tape onto the board, and slowly peel the backing off of the tape, laying the tape on the deck until the backing sheet separates completely. - Put the backing sheet over the griptape surface, and press a hand down on the surface to press out any air bubbles. If the air becomes trapped too well to be pushed out, use a push pin to poke the surface and press down the popped bubble. - Use the shaft of a screwdriver to mark the edges of the skateboard on the grip tape, showing a line where to cut the tape. Use a razor knife to cut the excess tape off. Replace the truck bolts and trucks on the board.
