How to enjoy a trip to Thailand

Thailand is more than just beaches and clear blue waters. If this is your first holiday to the kingdom, you are probably anxious to see as much scenery as possible. Here's how you can make your trip to Thailand one that you will never forget.

Choose one or two destinations to visit

Main destinations
Thailand’s main destinations include the mountains and jungles that are located in the north of the country. Bangkok is in fact situated in the centre, while the tropical beaches are mainly located in the south. This means that you’ll probably have to pick one area and stick to it, unless you have 3-4 weeks to travel around. Activities
By sticking to a single area, you will be able to explore beyond the obvious places of interest. When planning your Thailand trip, focus on your favourite activities and then choose a destination based upon it.
If you want outdoor adventures, hiking and climbing, the north of Thailand is your best bet. The south is best for snorkelling and scuba diving. Go to Bangkok if you want lots of cheap shopping opportunities.

Check the weather

Weather conditions
When travelling to Thailand, keep in mind that the country has a monsoon season. Fares are cheaper during that time, but you'll have to adjust your travel plans accordingly.
Monsoon season runs between July and October. Rains are usually short, lasting just a couple of hours in the afternoon. Some areas, however, might experience flooding.

Try local transportation

Tuk-tuk
You have not really experienced Thai travel until you hop in a tuk-tuk, Thailand's open, three-wheeled taxis. If you plan on travelling between Bangkok and Chiang Mai in the north, it is best to get a train ticket. Sights
The overnight train to Chiang Mai offers air-conditioned private cabins from where you can enjoy the scenery. Rolling hills give way to rice paddies, which boasts of a scenery of mango trees and colourful temples. If you are backpacking Asia, the train might not be the best choice, as it's actually more expensive than flying.

Don't be afraid to try things

Motorcycles
Whenever you are in Thailand, you can rent a motorcycle by the day or by the hour and set out to explore less-popular areas or attractions. Most places will not ask you to present your motorcycle license, so just make sure you can actually drive. Local cuisine
Don't be afraid to try the local cuisine either. Nam phrik, a spicy chilli sauce, is used in many dishes, including noodles, curry soups and fried rice. Try the popular khao phat (rice with shrimp or chicken) and yam wunsen (a sour salad made with glass noodles).
