Support lines
Several issues can cause Disc Read Errors. Before you try fixing your PS2, it’s worth mentioning that your PS2 is under warranty (if brought new) from Sony. Depending on which generation of system you brought, the console maybe under warranty for up to 90 days or a year (depending which version you have). Call Sony’s repair line to find out more - 08705 99 88 77. UK.Playstation.com (support)
Off warranty
If your console is out of warranty or you have a second hand model, there could be several issues that are creating PS2 problems. For a start, are your discs clean? Check by holding the disc with the title side up, fingers around the edges (do not touch the underside surface) check for dirt or scratches on the disc. Clean gently with a lint free cloth in a backwards and forwards motion (not in circles).
If that doesn’t work, enter the diagnostic mode:
- Turn on your PS2; select "Console" using the d-pad then triangle.
- Select "On" press the X button.
- Insert a PS2 disc and the console will automatically begin the diagnosis.
Opening your PS2
If that doesn’t work, you can open your console up (voiding the warranty) and clean or re-adjust the PS2 laser. To do this, you must unplug all connections and: - Flip the PlayStation 2 upside down and remove all the rubber feet and square tabs. Get the edge of a flathead screwdriver or a knife underneath them to pop them out. - Next step, grab a Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew all the screws. Take the bottom cover off. Flip your PS2 over again. From back to front, peel up the cover and slide it forward, then lift it off. You’ll notice a ribbon connecting the power and open/close buttons to the chassis. Lay the cover down as best you can without putting tension on this ribbon. - Last piece to remove is the black lid over the loading tray. There are four very tiny plastic screws holding it in. You'll need a jeweler screwdriver - remove the screws and lift the lid. - Clean the inside with a can of air; test the laser with different coloured discs, adjusting the lens position accordingly. When the laser reads discs correctly, pop everything back together. This should repair most Disc Read Errors.
