How to increase internet speed

If your internet connection is slow and you would like to speed it up to boost web browsing and speed up downloads, there are computer tweaks that you can perform to get faster speeds on your broad band. Read on how to tweak your PC to optimise available internet PC bandwidth connection for both speed up DSL and speed up dial up connection.

Fact

Many software applications that claim to increase internet speeds up to more than 100% are available on the internet. While it may be true the software can increase internet speeds, computer connection speeds cannot go beyond what is provided by the internet service provider. If your service provider has provided 512 Kbps (Kilobytes per second) maximum speed, your internet connection cannot go beyond this speed. Avoid software programs that claim to speed up a computer drastically, sometimes by up to 300% times to prevent disappointments or even loss of money.

Tweak PC to boost internet connectivity

Modify LAN properties Click your Windows XP "Start" button and go to "Network Connections." For Windows 7 users, type ncpa.cpl into the "Start" menu search box to open the "Network Connections" window. Right click on the main Internet connection that you are using and select "Properties." Unselect everything listed in the connection items except "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)." Internet Protocol, also referred by the initials TCP/IP, is a set of communications protocols used for connection to the internet and similar networks. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the Internet Protocol (IP) provide the basic connectivity functions that enable network connections. Click "OK" to set TCP/IP as the basic connectivity protocol. Limit reservable bandwidth By default, Windows Operating Systems keep 20% of available network bandwidth for own uses, such as Windows Updates and PC maintenance tasks. Reduce the 20% reserved bandwidth to increase internet speeds. Steps 1. Click the "Start" icon and type gpedit.msc in the "Start" menu search box for a Windows 7 and vista tweak. For windows XP, click "Start" button and then click "Run." Type gpedit.msc in the "Run" textbox and hit "OK." A "Group policy" window will open. 2. Navigate to "Local Computer Policy," "Administrative Templates," "Network" and finally, "QOS Packet Scheduler." 3. From right pane, double click on "Limit Reservable Bandwidth" to open its properties page. 4. Click the "Settings" tab on the "Limit Reservable Bandwidth properties" window. 5. Uncheck the "Not configured" default setting and check the "Enabled" check-box. 6. Adjust the bandwidth limit to 5%. Although you can set bandwidth to 0%, it is advisable to set it to at least 5%. 7. Click "Apply," "OK" and restart your PC to apply settings.
