Rebooting under normal circumstances

If you have been running a piece of unstable software, then your system may crash and you will need to restart your computer. The best way to do this is to hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and select task manager. Use the task manage to end any processes which are not responding and restart the computer using the shut down button. This could be a display driver problem which means you receive a black screen or a virus which prevents you from using your keyboard. If you experience a serious problem like this, then you should perform a Safe boot. - Restart your computer and press the F8 key as the computer starts. Exact safe keys may vary from machine to machine so check your user manual.
- When the Windows advanced options menu appears, choose "Safe Mode".

If you have two operating systems on your computer then you will need to follow the same process for dual booting.
Press F8 on restart and select your preferred operating system from the Windows advanced options menu.

The last resort

If your computer is running extremely slowly or there is a problem that you cannot solve, then repairing XP is not an option. If this is the case, the best course of action is to restore Windows. Restoration of Windows
Use your system restore CD or reboot DVD to start the installation.
Restart your computer, access your BIOS by pressing the DEL key and enter the boot order menu.
Note: Make sure that your optical drive is at the top of the list and restart your computer. The set up disc will now repair your system by doing a re-installation of Windows. Remember: Installing Windows from scratch deletes all of your data so be sure to backup your information before performing this operation.
